This is the mode of writing that I have thus far undertaken in writing my masters dissertation. I would like to point out that because I have a specified due date for submission, this approach is going to get me nothing but heart ache and an F (in UK terms an 8).
So I need your help - all of you. Please post comments of reasons that I should get in gear or helpful things that you do to keep yourself motivated when no one is around to do it for you. Please do not be smug and/or use the "fire and brimstone" approach -- it will just make me stubborn and insolent and therefore be a deterrent rather than an aid.
HELP ME!!!!

basically, you need to get it done so that you can rub my face in your very own superiority.
oooo superiority is a good one, I wish I had thought of that first.
I use sunflower seeds (the-in-the-shell-kind). They keep my fidgety brain just busy enough to pay attention to the task at hand.
But being better than everyone else should probably do the trick all on its own.
yeah, how cool would it be to say, "i'm amanda and this is my dissertation"?
you could get it leatherbound in volumes (if it is long enough) and display it prominently.
what is your topic by the way?
if you finish, i'll give you a cookie . . .
"I'm not only better than you, but I also have a cookie."
C'mon, how cool would that be?
a chocolate chip cookie no less
seriously. you should be running out of ink by now, with motivation like we've given you...
I don't like cookies.
Or chocolate chips.
And I'm superior even without my masters.
I think you all should try again.
i'm taking my ball and going home.
(blows big raspberry as she walks away....)
I'm joking about the superiority thing, but I really do need some help coming up with good motivating reasons.
You . . . don't . . . like . . . cookies?
I just don't understand.
Ok, here's some more motivation:
-Stick it to the man.
-Support the man.
-Replace the man with a woman who can do more than one thing at a time.
For reals, I like to give myself a small goal (like get through three sources or write two pages). That helps me to break the big task down into small, manageble chunks.
I also give myself a "carrot" on the other end of the small goal - 30 minutes of TV, or video games, or blogging.
Thanks James - all of that was really helpful.
